Stories and history

The story of this place

The Tham Krasae bridge, or Wampo Viaduct, is on the Death Railway in Lum Sum, Sai Yok, Kanchanaburi: a timber trestle hugging a cliff above the Khwae Noi, roughly 300–400 m long. It is about 45–50 km from Kanchanaburi by road or 1 h 10 min by train, with a Tham Krasae halt at the bridge and Wang Pho station just beyond.

Work on the Thai section of the Thailand–Burma Railway began in mid-1942. This stretch was built in March–April 1943, reputedly in 17 days and nights, by about 700 British, 600 Australian and 450 Dutch prisoners plus about 100 Thai labourers. The line was joined near Konkoita on 17 October 1943. Some 12,000–13,000 Allied prisoners and tens of thousands of Asian labourers died along it.

Tham Krasae cave, beside the track mid-bridge, holds a large golden Buddha and smaller images, with views down the gorge. Accounts of its wartime use differ — shelter, store, field hospital or prison. After the war Thailand bought the Thai section; only Nong Pladuk–Nam Tok still runs, and trains crawl across the viaduct at about 5 km/h.

In August 2025 the railway added a steel refuge platform for walkers. On 28 September 2026 the Khwae Noi rose about 4 m around the piers, and trains between Tha Kilen and Nam Tok were suspended, terminating at Tha Kilen; service through Tham Krasae resumed on 3 October 2026, though the weekend excursion trains 909/910 were still cancelled in early October because of water near the line between Nam Tok and Sai Yok Noi — check SRT on 1690. In normal times train 257 crosses about 11:40, 259 about 17:46, and 258 heads back about 13:28.

The bridge and cave are free with no gate; the train costs foreigners about 100 baht. Walk the bridge only when no train is due — it is a working line, much of it has no railing, the sleepers have gaps and it is slippery in rain, so hold children's hands. Dress modestly in the cave. The riverside Tham Krasae restaurant opens 08:30–20:00 (081-986-7187). November–February is best; March–May is very hot.
