Stories and history

The story of this place

Mueang Sing Historical Park is in Sing subdistrict, Sai Yok, Kanchanaburi, on the north bank of the Khwae Noi: turn left off Highway 323 around km 15 and drive about 7 km — some 35–45 km from town. It covers about 641 rai and is run by the Fine Arts Department.

A burial site outside the south-east wall by the river held four skeletons about 1,800 years old with pots and shell, stone and glass-bead ornaments. The sanctuary is usually dated to Jayavarman VII, around the late 12th century, in Bayon style as a Mahayana Buddhist site, and linked with Srijayasimhapura in the Preah Khan inscription — though a 1987 Silpa Watthanatham article argues local builders made it later in imitation of Khmer style.

The town was abandoned for centuries and is absent from Ayutthaya records; under Rama I 'Mueang Sing' reappears as a frontier fort. It was registered as a monument in the Royal Gazette (vol. 52) dated 8 March BE 2478 — 1936 CE — extended in 1960, excavated and restored from 1974, and opened as a historical park by Princess Sirindhorn on 3 April 1987 (English Wikipedia says 1997).

The town has laterite walls about 7 m high with a gate in each side and several rings of moats and earthworks, the river forming the southern moat. Monument 1, the best preserved, has a central prang, four gopuras, a gallery and a library, with the eight-armed Bayon-style Avalokiteshvara (the original was moved to the National Museum, Bangkok) and a Prajnaparamita at the rear gopura. Monument 2 has a similar plan; Monuments 3 and 4 are nearby. Multilingual QR signs were added in 2025.

It opens roughly 08:00–16:30. Fees: Thais 20, foreigners 100 baht (one source says 120), cars 50, motorbikes 20, bicycles 10. Allow 1–2 hours. The site is open with little shade and very hot March–May; laterite underfoot is uneven, mosquitoes gather by the moats, and there are few food stalls, so bring water. Phone 034-670-264.
