Stories and history

The story of this place

Erawan National Park is in Tha Kradan, Si Sawat, Kanchanaburi, on Highway 3199, about 65–70 km from Kanchanaburi town and 200 km from Bangkok. It covers about 550 km², mostly mixed deciduous forest. Buses run from Kanchanaburi bus station, and Srinagarind Dam is about 4 km away.

The area was part of the Khao Salop forest and was declared Thailand's 12th national park on 19 June 1975. Erawan Falls, fed by the Huai Mong Lai, steps down seven limestone tiers over about 1.5 km from the trailhead to the top. It is named after Erawan, the three-headed elephant, as the top tier is said to resemble its heads.

One source names the tiers Lai Khuen Rang, Wang Matcha, Pha Nam Tok, Ok Nang Phi Suea, Buea Mai Long, Dong Phruksa and Phu Pha Erawan. Paths and bridges reach tier 6; tier 7 needs a scramble, and tiers 4–7 are steep. Garra fish nibble feet in the pools, alongside larger mahseer. The park also has the 544 m Phra That cave, about 12 km from HQ up an 800 m concrete path, nature trails and some 237 bird species.

Fees were revised in 2022, and the park had about 519,235 visitors in fiscal 2024. It closed several times in 2026: on 21 April for forest fires and PM2.5 (reopening the next day), in late September for flash floods, and from 12 October swimming was suspended for muddy water though viewing was allowed. Check the park's page before every visit.

It opens 08:00–16:30 with no entry after 15:30, and after about 16:00 often only tiers 1–2 are open. Fees: Thai adults 60, children 30; foreigners 300/150; cars 30 baht. No food beyond tier 2, plastic bottles carry a 20-baht deposit, swimming is only in designated pools and life jackets may be required. Golf carts run to the lower tiers and bikes can be hired; there are bungalows and a campsite. Phone 034-574-222. Pets are not allowed.
