Stories and history

The story of this place

Srinagarind Dam, formerly Chao Nen Dam, is at Ban Chao Nen, Tha Kradan, Si Sawat, Kanchanaburi, on the Khwae Yai — 64–70 km from Kanchanaburi town on Highway 3199 and about 4 km from Erawan Falls. It is run by the Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (EGAT).

It is Thailand's largest clay-core rockfill dam: 140 m high with a 610 m, 15 m-wide crest. Its 419 km² reservoir holds 17,745 million m³ — the most in the country — at a normal level of +180 m. It generates 720 MW, including two pumped-storage units, about 1,160–1,250 GWh a year, and was the first multipurpose dam of the Mae Klong basin project.

Feasibility studies ran 1967–69 and design 1970–77; construction began in 1973 per EGAT (1974 per some sources), with completion and the first unit in 1980. On 15 June 1981 King Bhumibol, with Princess Sirindhorn, opened the dam and named it Srinagarind after the Princess Mother. Khuean Srinagarindra National Park was declared the same year.

On 11 November 1991 Princess Sirindhorn opened the Sundial Garden for the Princess Mother's 90th birthday, and the last generating unit came online that year. The grounds also have a golf course, guesthouse, restaurant and reservoir cruises. In late 2025 the energy ministry pushed a 770 MW floating solar project, with a first 140 MW phase due in 2027.

The crest and gardens are open roughly 06:00–18:00, free, with free parking. Raft resorts dot the reservoir — wear life jackets on boats, and don't swim off the crest. Highway 3199 is winding. The seven-tier Huai Mae Khamin Falls in Khuean Srinagarindra National Park is 105–110 km away, by the west-side road or an irregular car ferry across the reservoir. EGAT restaurant: 034-574-001 ext 2455.
