The story of this place
Wat Si Rong Mueang is on Tha Khrao Noi Road, Sop Tui, Mueang Lampang, in the Ban Tha Khrao quarter on the west side of town, backing onto the Wang River. Tha Khrao Noi Road is one of the five roads leaving the Clock Tower junction, so it is an easy stop on a horse-cart tour.

Its original name was Wat Tha Khrao Noi Phama, as a Silpakorn University paper and other sources agree; it was later renamed Wat Si Rong Mueang.
Sources give three build dates: 1905 in a 2019 Silpakorn NAJUA paper, 1904 in a 2022 MCU peace-studies journal, and about 1900 in Silpa Watthanatham; some accounts say construction took about seven years, to 1912. All fall in the reign of Rama V.
A 2022 MCU journal article names the builder as Pho Thao Kyaung Daga Inta, a Shan businessman who logged teak for the Bombay Burmah company, while the NAJUA paper describes nine Pa-O (Taungthu) men and their Tai Yuan wives — matching accounts of nine Burmese families in Lampang's teak era. Some travel sources say Kyaung Daga Inta and Mae Kyaung Daga Kham On donated the land and Pa-O merchants led by Kyaung Daga Nanta Noi funded the building. "Kyaung daga" is a Burmese title meaning monastery donor, not a personal name.
The main building is a kyaung, a Burmese-style monastery hall of teak raised high on posts, with a brick-and-plaster storage floor beneath. The Buddha image is at the north end, the building faces south, and the abbot's and monks' quarters lie on the east side of the same structure.
Its roof has five stacked gable tiers (travel sources describe nine spires). The plan and roof resemble the kyaung of Wat Yaung Waing Kyaung Taik in Thaton, Myanmar, built in 1876, and research finds the layered fretwork shows Siamese influence fashionable under Rama VI. Some carved-wood fretwork was later replaced with pierced zinc for durability.
Inside, the pillars before the Buddha room bear raised lacquer reliefs of animals, people, deities and vines, and the ceiling panels have lacquer-drawn flowers and animals inlaid with coloured glass — said to come from Inwa — using a lacquer-and-ash technique.
The temple also has a teak Buddha carved by a Mandalay artist, a Burmese-style chedi and a shrine to Bo Bo Gyi, a Burmese guardian spirit people pray to for success; Krungsri TV featured it in 2025. The temple was a location for the drama Rak Nakhara.
One source says Sang To Rattanakamole led a major restoration in 1931, but this is unconfirmed, and no Fine Arts Department registration notice has been found.
Lampang has more than 40 temples with Burmese architecture. Nearby Wat Si Chum dates from about 1900 too; its kyaung burned on 16 January 1992 and was restored by the Fine Arts Department in 1996, so the two make a Burmese-temple walk in town.
A 2019 visitor survey found people wanted more toilets, a flower-and-incense shop and a tourist service point. The temple opens in the daytime, about 08:00–17:00; reported fees range from free to 20–50 baht. Allow 30–45 minutes.
