Stories and history

The story of this place

Wat Ton Son stands on the west bank of the Chao Phraya on Thetsaban 10 Road, Talat Luang, in Ang Thong town. It is a local temple known for a huge metal Buddha, the revered Luang Pho Dam and a riverside fish sanctuary.

There is no written record of its founding, but the style of the old ubosot suggests the late Ayutthaya period, around 1767. The temple later decayed until it was nearly abandoned. In 1945 Phra Ratchasuwannamoli, a former chief monk of Ang Thong province, restored it, enlarged the grounds and built new halls.

In 1973 work began on Somdet Phra Phuttha Nawalokuttara Thammabodi Si Mueang Thong, or Somdet Phra Si Mueang Thong, a Buddha in the Maravijaya posture cast entirely in metal, lacquered and gilded. Its lap is about 6 wa 3 sok 9 niu (about 13.7 m) and its height about 9 wa 2 sok (about 19–20 m). The topknot was placed on 7 March 1985 by Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn on behalf of King Rama IX. It is regarded as a guardian image of Ang Thong and is often called the largest metal Buddha in this posture in Thailand.

The ubosot holds Luang Pho Dam, an Ayutthaya-style principal Buddha flanked by two chief disciples under a gold parasol, said to be over 100 years old and deeply revered locally. The ubosot also has murals and a pavilion holding relics, while the vihara has a replica of Phra Phuttha Chinnarat and shrines to Guanyin, Luang Pho Sothon, Chao Mae Takhian Thong and Luang Pu Thuat.

The riverbank in front of the temple is a fish sanctuary. Visitors buy fish food to scatter for the striped catfish and other river fish that gather in shoals, and release fish to make merit. The temple asks visitors to use the food sold on site and not to throw bags into the river.

Its riverside setting puts the temple at risk in high-water years. On 26 October 2021 Chao Phraya water seeped through a pipe and flooded the grounds 50 cm to 1 m deep near the turtle pond, and sandbags were needed to plug the leak. There have also been reports of people scratching their names on the back of the Buddha, so visitors are asked not to touch or write on it.
