Stories and history

The story of this place

Wat Khun Inthapramun, in Inthapramun, Pho Thong, about 12 km from Ang Thong town, is home to Phra Si Mueang Thong, a brick-and-stucco reclining Buddha about 50 m (25 wa) long and 11 m high. It now lies in the open air, ringed only by the octagonal pillars of its lost vihara.

Its style mixes Sukhothai and Ayutthaya features: an oval face, arched brows and a faint smile, so it is usually dated to the Sukhothai period. One story says King Li Thai stopped at Khok Bang Phlap, saw a fireball in a vision and built the image, but this is legend. The Testimony of Khun Luang Ha Wat lists it among the reclining Buddhas that were the "glory of the capital" of Ayutthaya.

The temple is named after Khun Inthapramun, a devout tax collector who, legend says, secretly used royal tax money to restore and enlarge the Buddha. Questioned by officials, he refused to say where the money went so that the merit would not pass to anyone else, and was flogged to death. A hall in the temple holds his statue and a skeleton believed to be his.

The vihara burned during the war that ended in the first fall of Ayutthaya in 1569, and the site lay abandoned for a long time. King Borommakot later restored it and came to pay homage around 1753–54, after visiting Wat Phra Non Chaksi. During the second fall of Ayutthaya in 1767 the vihara roof collapsed, leaving the Buddha in the open.

King Chulalongkorn (Rama V) visited in 1878 and again in 1908, when he measured the image at 1 sen 3 wa without its flame finial and ordered repairs. The Fine Arts Department registered it as an ancient monument in the Royal Gazette of 8 March 1936 and restored the image in 1975–76. Besides the Buddha there are an octagonal chedi, an old ubosot on a mound and the Luang Pho Khao vihara, overgrown by a banyan tree.

The image subsided around 1997, and the great flood of 2011 damaged its base and cracked the figure, so the province restored it in 2012–13. The temple now also has a new ubosot with escalators and a lift for elderly visitors.

Robe-wrapping (hom pha phra non) is held on Makha Bucha, Visakha Bucha, Asalha Bucha and in late December, believed to bring a peaceful life. At the end of 2015 the cloth, sewn by every district, was about 25 wa long, and the 2023 "Rom Pho Thong" fair ran from 27 July to 6 August. Visitors also bow at the soles to pray for health and long life.
