Stories and history

The story of this place

Wat Huai Kaeo is at Moo 1, Maha Son, Ban Mi, Lop Buri, on Highway 3028 (Lop Buri–Ban Mi), on the left heading to Ban Mi, about 40 km from Lop Buri town. It is a Maha Nikai community temple — not the Wat Huai Kaeo in Phitsanulok.

Read more 4 more paragraphs

It was founded around 1871, named after the Huai Kaeo stream near Khlong Bang Kham, and received its royal boundary grant on 28 August 1900; the ordination hall has murals of the Buddha's life. Databases list the abbot as Phra Khru Rattanathikhun in 2024 and Phra Athikan Krit Suchiwo in 2026 — possibly a change, possibly stale data, so ask at the temple.

The highlight is Phra Chedi Maha Metta Rattana Rangsi, locally the 'Bodh Gaya chedi': a 12-sided Sukhothai-style chedi in the middle of Bueng Huai Kaeo, 32.8 m tall and 24 m across, reached by a 29.7 m naga bridge. The chedi form is Thai; its base, gateways, apsara figures and naga bridge are Khmer-style in laterite-look material; the interior is arranged in Burmese style.

Inside are a white jade pagoda and white and green jade Buddhas brought from Myanmar, including eight white jade Buddhas facing the eight directions, in a forest-like setting; relics and 84,000 Phra Ruang amulets are said to be enshrined. No construction year has been found — it is a modern building with Khmer-style ornament, not an ancient Khmer chedi. The grounds also have a shrine to the nine naga families, a small waterfall and a café.

It opens roughly 06:00–18:00 (some say to 20:00), free, with parking. From 08:00–10:00 morning light falls on the chedi and still water gives reflections, with thin mist some October–November mornings; midday is glaring on the open grounds. Dress modestly and watch children on the bridge, which has water on both sides. The 2026 kathin is on 7 November at 09:00. Pair it with Wat Khao Wong Kot in Ban Mi. Phone 089-237-8896.
