Stories and history

The story of this place

Khao Kho wind farm is at Ban Phet Dam, Thung Samo subdistrict, Khao Kho district, Phetchabun, on a plateau about 1,050 m above sea level covering about 350 rai. It is a private power plant owned by Khao Kor Wind Power Co., Ltd. — not EGAT — which sells its power to EGAT; GE names its chairman as Chatchaval Jiaravanon, and partners include energy firms such as Demco, RATCH and Wind Energy Holding.

It generates 60 MW from 24 GE 2.5-120 turbines of 2.5 MW each, with 120 m rotors and a hub height of 110 m, about 170 m to the blade tip, enough for some 36,000 Thai homes; some sources call the turbines about 100 m tall.

GE announced the turbine supply contract on 3 December 2015; construction in 2015–16 employed over 400 workers, and the farm began generating in August 2016. It lies in Khao Kho, a battleground between the state and the Communist Party of Thailand in 1968–82.

There are two viewpoints, Chang Doi and the Wind Turbine Terrace, opposite the Suan Son car park, and a community-run electric tram tours the farm; 2023–24 reviews give about 10 baht entry and 60 baht for the tram, so check on site. Operating zones are off-limits. There are cafés, lodging, a swing and photo spots; hours are about 06:00–18:00.

Reviewers advise approaching from the south on the better paved road; the north side turns to dirt and gravel unsuited to small cars. It is windy with no shade and very cold in winter. The best time is November to February for clear skies and morning mist. Strawberry farms and community shops are nearby.
