The story of this place
Wat Phra Yuen Phutthabat Yukhon, locally just Wat Phra Yuen, is in Thung Yang, Lap Lae district, Uttaradit, on Khao Tao (Khao Thong) hill — the same hill as Wat Phra Thaen Sila At, on a different peak, about 200–300 m apart on foot over the hill or about 1 km by road. It is an ordinary Mahanikaya temple.

"Yukhon" means a pair, referring to the twin footprints in the mondop. "Phra Yuen", standing, comes from the legend continuing the Phra Thaen story: after eating on the stone slab, the Buddha stood on this hilltop and left his footprints before going to recline at Wat Phra Non. The sacred object is therefore the footprints, not a large standing Buddha.
The twin footprints lie on a round lotus pedestal about 1.5 m high at the centre of the mondop; the environment ministry's record says they are carved from laterite. The mondop is Chiang Saen–Lanna style with a tiered red pyramidal roof, murals on walls, columns and several ceiling levels, and two standing Buddha images.
Most sources hold that the temple dates from the same era as Wat Phra Thaen Sila At. A 2002 local-school article says the mondop was repaired in the Ayutthaya period and may be older, while the old chedi base beside it and laterite stupa remains resemble Sukhothai work. One source calls the mondop Ayutthaya style, but most, including the official register, call it Chiang Saen.
It was registered as an ancient monument in the Royal Gazette on 8 March 1935, the same day as Wat Phra Borommathat Thung Yang. No royal visit to this temple specifically is recorded, though King Chulalongkorn visited Wat Phra Thaen and Wat Phra Borommathat, both within 1 km, on 24 October 1901.
The new ubosot houses Luang Pho Phuttharangsi, a Sukhothai-style bronze Buddha in the earth-touching posture, about 55 in across the lap and 66 in high. Legend says it was coated in plaster to hide it from invaders; when the plaster later cracked and the bronze showed, it was moved from the mondop to the new ubosot, at an unrecorded date.
Wat Phra Yuen is one of Thung Yang's three Buddha sites — the footprints here, the slab at Wat Phra Thaen and the relic at Wat Phra Borommathat. During the third-month Phra Thaen festival people visit all three in a day, so it is busier then.
Open daily 08:00–17:00, free. From Uttaradit take Highway 102 toward Thung Yang, pass Wat Phra Borommathat and continue about 500 m; the temple is on the left near a junction. Dress modestly, remove shoes before the mondop and ubosot, and never point your feet at the footprints or images.
