Stories and history

The story of this place

Wang Takrai Park, at 222 Moo 1, Sarika–Nang Rong Road, Hin Tang, Mueang Nakhon Nayok, is a private park of about 1,400–1,500 rai, not a national park. It is run by the Chumbhot–Pantip Foundation, which also looks after Suan Pakkad Palace in Bangkok. Two streams meet inside: Khlong Maduea from Heo Krathin waterfall and Khlong Wang Takrai from Mae Plong waterfall.

Its founder was Prince Chumbhotbongs Paribatra (Krom Muen Nakhon Sawan Sakdiphinit), born 5 December 1904, eldest son of Prince Paribatra Sukhumbandhu and a grandson of King Rama V, who studied at Oxford, together with his wife M.R. Pantip Paribatra (née Devakula), born 8 March 1909 and widely known as "Khun Than". The garden's formal name is "Chumbhot-Pantip Utthayan".

In 1952 the couple bought land between two streams flowing out of Khao Yai and built a retreat for family and relatives; the same year they turned their Bangkok residence into Suan Pakkad Palace. The Prince died on 15 September 1959, aged 54, and Wang Takrai opened to the public in the early 1960s (sources say 1960 or 1962) as a place for botanical learning and ecotourism.

After his death M.R. Pantip spent more than ten years laying out the gardens, turning cogon-grass fields into lawns and flower beds — the Khun Than flower garden with its replica waterfall, and the Pathum pond. She was the first to bring the pink trumpet tree to Thailand, around 1947, and Luang Buresbamrungkarn named it "Chomphu Pantip" after her, though there is no evidence it was first planted at Wang Takrai. Ownership later passed to the foundation she set up in her husband's memory.

Villagers called it "Wang Takrai" because the stream forms a wide, deep pool (wang) lined with takrai hang nak and khrai nam plants. The streams from Khao Yai flood from time to time: on 13 August 2018 a visitor was swept away above the Wang Takrai canal bridge and rescued by locals, and on 25 August 2022 the canals overflowed and swimming was banned.

The foundation now stresses nature education. In 2025 the National Science Museum journal published a wildlife survey of the park, and on 15 June 2026 the museum and the foundation launched the book "Nature of Wang Takrai, Vol. 1" at the park, aiming to make it a living natural classroom.
