Stories and history

The story of this place

Wat Phra Non Chaksi Worawihan is a third-class royal temple of the Worawihan grade at No. 1 Chaksi, Mueang Sing Buri, about 4 km from town on Route 3032. It enshrines Luang Pho Phra Non Chaksi, a reclining Buddha in the pose of subduing Asurindarahu and the province's guardian image.

The image is about 47 m long — 47.40 m per the temple, 47.42 or 47.33 m elsewhere, and 16 wa in an Ayutthaya-era account. Its head points east and face north; it is late Sukhothai or U-Thong in style, stucco over a brick and laterite core, lying flat on a low pillow with the right arm stretched forward rather than propping the head — unlike Bangkok-style images, as King Rama V noted. Don't call it Thailand's longest; longer ones exist.

Legend says Prince Singhabahu, son of a lion, killed his father in shame and built this Buddha around a gold core to atone; it later collapsed into a mound, and Thao U-Thong, leading a cart caravan, found the core and rebuilt the image in stucco with villagers. The name Chaksi may come from Wat Chaksi about 1.2 km away. In the Ayutthaya period it was one of eight sacred sites outside the capital, and Valentyn's map of about 1724–26 shows it as the first major site north of Ayutthaya.

In 1754 King Borommakot found the image badly decayed and ordered it restored with a new vihara, ordination hall and monks' quarters, returning in 1756 for three days of celebration. In 1878 King Rama V found the old vihara collapsed onto it (Matichon gives visits in 1880 and 1901) and funded a restoration, completing today's vihara — about 54 by 22 m — in 1885. Before the image sit Phra Kan and Phra Kaeo, Rama V-era Buddhas used in the oath-of-allegiance rite.

The temple says the Fine Arts Department registered it in the Royal Gazette (vol. 52) on 8 March BE 2478, though one source ties that notice to nearby Wat Na Phra That, which this temple oversees (1936 CE, as the Thai year then began in April). The stucco was heavily restored in 1967, and King Rama IX and the royal family visited on 9 October 1976, recorded on a marble slab at the feet. In front of the vihara is a cannonball tree: wish, clap beneath it, and if a flower falls your wish will come true. A provincial Buddha park opened in front of the temple in late 2020. It is an important Pali study centre, and its abbot was raised to Phra Phrom Wachirathirakhun on 7 June 2026.

It is open about 08:00–17:00 and free. Cover shoulders and knees, remove shoes in the vihara and don't use flash; the hall is dim and pillars block photos. There is a big car park and a local-produce market. Every 15 April the Parupanang ceremony parades nine robes through town and drapes them on the image — in 2026 at 14:30 on 15 April — and the 2026 kathin is on 20 November at 13:00. Restaurants are nearby, and Sing Buri's speciality is Mae La snakehead fish.
