Stories and history

The story of this place

Wat Phai Rong Wua, formerly Wat Photharam (one report says the name was officially changed in 1990), is in Bang Ta Then, Song Phi Nong, Suphan Buri, on Highway 3422 south of Khlong Phraya Banlue — about 43 km from Suphan Buri town and 70 km from Bangkok. It now covers about 248 rai.

In 1926 villagers set up a monks' retreat on about 20 rai of bamboo grove where they tethered cattle — hence 'bamboo cattle shed'. Luang Pho Khom (Phra Khru Uphaiyaphadathon), from Ban Phai Doh in Song Phi Nong, settled here in 1936 and developed it, raising the ground against floods and building a pond, kutis, a sala and an ordination hall. He vowed to make ten million amulets, and his amulets are prized by collectors.

In 1957 Luang Pho Khom began raising funds for Phra Phuttha Khodom, a huge bronze Buddha with a lap of about 10.25 m and about 26 m tall including the base; casting began in 1959, and on 12 March 1969 King Bhumibol raised its crown finial. The hell garden followed in 1971 on about 4 rai, after the Phra Malai text, and in 1975–80 Phra Kakusandho, a white stucco Buddha about 57 m tall with a 40 m lap.

In front of Phra Kakusandho stand replicas of the four Buddhist holy sites — birth, enlightenment, first sermon and parinirvana. There is also the white hundred-spired vihara in a pond, a three-storey 'palace of Prince Siddhartha' to climb for the view, and stucco tableaux of the Buddha's life and Thai literature. Luang Pho Khom died on 7 January 1990, aged 88. The temple's 'world's largest' claims for some items, like a gong and a Dhamma wheel, are unverified.

It opens about 08:00–17:00 and is free, with a large car park. The hell garden's figures of hungry ghosts and punishments are graphic, with nudity and violence, so prepare young children; some visitors say the paint has faded. There is little shade between sights, so come early, and dress modestly. Food stalls and amulet stands operate inside; most amulets sold are not old. In May 2025 cannabis was found in a temple storeroom, and the committee filed a police report.

The temple holds an annual alms-scattering (thing krachat) festival that draws people from many provinces; the 53rd was on 11 August 2025. Expect big crowds and traffic — check the temple's page for the date.
