Stories and history

The story of this place

Wat Khiri Wong sits on Khao Dao Dueng off Mathuli Road in Pak Nam Pho, Mueang Nakhon Sawan, about 3 km from Pak Nam Pho market. It is a civil temple. The hill was named 'Doi Daowadueng' by Somdet Phra Phutthachan (At Asabhamahathera) of Wat Mahathat, Bangkok, because it lies at the end of Dao Dueng Road. It is not Khao Kop, the neighbouring hill of Wat Woranat Banphot, though some websites mix them up.

The hill holds traces of a late-Sukhothai temple — bricks, boundary stones and Buddha images — abandoned for centuries. In 1961 a wandering monk found the ruins and asked the Religious Affairs and Fine Arts departments to help restore them, reviving the temple. In 1982 Phra Phuttha Chinnasi, a Buddha subduing Mara about 10 m tall, was built on the summit, blending Chiang Saen, Sukhothai and Rattanakosin styles. The temple now covers about 280 rai and is the provincial meditation centre.

The golden Phra Chulamani Chedi stands on the base of an old Sukhothai chedi, as Somdet Phra Phutthachan (At) advised — his titles were restored in 1975 and he became Somdet Phra Phutthachan in 1985, so the advice likely dates from then rather than the 1961 revival. Luang Pho Maha Bunrot built it over about 17 years, 1990–2007 (single source). Its four floors hold relics, four replica Buddhas — the Emerald Buddha, Phra Phuttha Chinnarat, Phra Phuttha Sothon and Luang Pho Wat Rai Khing — and Buddha-life murals, with a viewing deck on top. It also serves as the birth-year chedi for people born in the Year of the Dog. No height figure has been published.

The summit gives a 360° view of the city, Dechatiwong Bridge, the meeting of the Ping and Nan that forms the Chao Phraya, Pak Nam Pho market, Sawan Park, Khao Kop and, on clear days, Bueng Boraphet. Beside the temple is the municipal Nakhon Sawan Tower, 32 m and 10 floors, with exhibits, a drinks zone and a deck; tickets are 20 baht for adults and 10 for children, and its hours differ from the temple's.

The temple is open about 08:00–18:00 and free; dress modestly and remove shoes in the chedi. Drive from Mathuli Road onto Dao Dueng Road and up a steep concrete road to the summit car park. Arrive about an hour before sunset, as the top is hot and shadeless at midday. In 2022 the temple was one of the Tak Bat Thewo venues; in 2026 Ok Phansa falls on 26 October, so check event dates with the temple.
