Stories and history

The story of this place

Wat Khao Wong Phra Chan is in Huai Pong, Khok Samrong, Lop Buri. From town take Phahonyothin Road (Highway 1) to about km 178–179, then turn right for about 5 km — some 28–40 km in all depending on the route. Its hallmark is a staircase of 3,790 steps, about 1,680 m long, up to a Buddha footprint on the summit, about 644–650 m high. Entry is free, with parking in front of the temple.

A Ramakien legend says Rama's arrow pinned the giant Thao Kokkhanak to this hill, tended by his daughter Nang Nong Prachan, after whom the hill is named; Hanuman must hammer the arrow back if it loosens, and since vinegar loosens it, Lop Buri was said never to sell vinegar. The present name dates from 1953, when Luang Pho Ophasi climbed it and named it for its ring of curving ridges.

Its key developer was Luang Pho Fak Phatthachari, a former civil servant ordained on 4 July 1952, who built the stairs, the museum and the temple buildings; the year the stairs were built is not known. Sources conflict on his later life: a forum post says he died in 2012, while 2022 news still describes Luang Pu Fak, the former abbot, as aged 93. The current abbot is Phra Maha Thawatchai Sirithacho, Khok Samrong district monk-head. The three-storey teak museum shows ceramics, Benjarong, amulets, ceremonial fans and more than 100 portraits of King Rama V.

At the foot stands Luang Pho Phutthachok, a Chiang Saen-style seated Buddha about 75 m tall with a lap of about 45 m, begun in 2010, named on 30 January 2018 and consecrated on 25 April 2018 — often called Lop Buri's largest Buddha. The summit has the footprint, Guanyin and Guan Yu statues, Nang Prachan's cave and an all-round view. The climb takes 1–3 hours, plus about an hour down.

The footprint festival is held each year in the third lunar month around Chinese New Year for about 15 days and nights, with the stairs lit and open 24 hours; in 2026 it ran 17 February–3 March. Normally it opens about 05:00–18:00. Climb 05:00–09:00 or after 16:00, and bring water and a torch. The stairs are very steep and hard on the knees going down; sliding down the central rail on a 'thung sing' sack is fast but risky. Steps are slippery in the rains, and festival days bring traffic and crowds. Temple office 061-070-7161.
