Stories and history

The story of this place

Khao Krachom rises at Ban Pha Pok, Moo 3, Suan Phueng, Ratchaburi, near the Thai–Myanmar border in the Tenasserim range. The summit is about 1,045 m high and holds a Border Patrol Police post and helipad. No national-park management was found; tours and 4WD rides are run by villagers and the Khao Krachom conservation group.

Karen and local villagers once called the mountain "Khao Lan Da". Around the 1970s Thai tin miners began calling it "Khao Krachom" because its shape looked like a tepee (krachom); Suan Phueng was once an important tin-mining area.

By around 2009 it was a popular camping spot, with hundreds of people staying on weekends, open-air washrooms fed by mountain water, and rules against littering and burning. But a 2016 Chulalongkorn University doctoral study found tourism there "in crisis", citing off-road noise, disturbance to wildlife, water shortage, waste and little community participation.

In 2022 vehicle times were fixed: up only 04:00–07:00, down 07:00–09:00, two-way 09:00–19:00 and no vehicles after 19:00. In March 2022 the Border Patrol Police also barred a group from trekking up, calling it a border security zone. Khao Krachom remains one of Suan Phueng's favourite sea-of-mist and sunrise spots; check with operators before you go.
